My latest book is The Roads to Rome: A History. It’s now out in the UK and available to order. It’s been described as ‘epic and witty’ in the Observer and ‘elegantly plotted’ in the Times.
The US edition will follow in December 2024 and translations into Italian and Chinese are in progress.
I also have an exciting tie-in tour coming up in September 2024 with Istoria Travel: check out the details here.
Here’s the official description:

“Brimming with life and drama, this is the first book to explore two thousand years of European history through one of the most important imperial networks every built, and to tell the full story of life on the roads that lead to Rome.”
The story spans more than two thousand years, from the construction of the earliest Roman roads via stories of Byzantine noblewomen, medieval pilgrims, Renaissance antiquarians, Grand Tourists, Romantics… the list goes on, bringing us right up to the present day through histories of Fascism and the lighter side of post-war tourism. It’s been great fun to write – especially once restrictions were lifted and I was able to do my own tour of the sites, which took me north to Scotland, south to Cádiz, east to Istanbul and back west to Rome. That tale of travel is there in the book too.
